Notice CP298 - Tax Lien Release

Type: Lien Release | Level: info

IRC Section: IRC § 6325

Response Deadline: N/A

Good news: the IRS has released your tax lien. This means your debt is resolved — either you paid it, the collection statute expired, or the lien was withdrawn. The lien is no longer on your property or your public record.

A CP298 notifies you that a Notice of Federal Tax Lien has been released. The IRS has removed the lien because the tax debt has been paid in full, the statute of limitations on collection has expired, or the lien has been withdrawn. This is good news — the lien is no longer on your record.

Common Triggers

  4. Step 4: Consider requesting lien withdrawal
  5. Step 5: Monitor credit for updates

Common Questions About CP298

Will a released lien still show up on my credit report?
Federal tax liens no longer appear on consumer credit reports (as of 2018 Equifax/Experian/TransUnion policy change). However, the lien remains a matter of public record until it's formally withdrawn (not just released). A withdrawal removes it from public records entirely.
What's the difference between a lien release and a lien withdrawal?
A release removes the lien's claim on your property but the public record may still exist. A withdrawal removes the lien entirely — as if it was never filed. Withdrawal is available if you enter a direct-debit installment agreement with a balance under $25,000, or if the lien was filed in error.
