Notice CP53 - Direct Deposit Issue
IRC Section: IRC § 6402
Response Deadline: N/A
Your direct deposit didn't go through — the bank account info on your return was wrong, the account was closed, or the names didn't match. The IRS will mail you a check instead. No action needed, but expect a paper check in 4-6 weeks.
A CP53 notifies you that there was an issue with your direct deposit refund. The IRS was unable to deposit your refund into the bank account you provided — usually because the account was closed, the routing number was wrong, or the name on the account didn't match. The IRS will mail a check instead.
Common Triggers
- Bank account mismatch
- Account closed

Common Questions About CP53
- How long will it take to get my check after a CP53?
- Typically 4-6 weeks from the date of the notice. The IRS will mail the check to the address on your most recent filed return. If you've moved, update your address with the IRS using Form 8822.
- Can I fix the direct deposit info and get it faster?
- No. Once the direct deposit fails, the IRS automatically converts it to a paper check. You cannot re-submit direct deposit information for a refund that's already been processed.
