Notice CP502 - Reminder of Balance Due
IRC Section: IRC § 6159
Response Deadline: 10 days
This is the IRS's second reminder that you owe money. They sent a CP14, then a CP501, and you still haven't paid. No threats yet — but they're getting closer. Pay or set up a payment plan now, before the tone changes.
A CP502 is the second reminder notice for an unpaid tax balance. It follows the CP14 (initial bill) and CP501 (first reminder). The IRS is escalating visibility of the debt but has not yet threatened levy or lien. This is still a good moment to resolve the balance — the next notice (CP503) carries sterner language.
Common Triggers
- Unpaid CP501 balance
- No payment arrangement
- Previous notices ignored

Common Questions About CP502
- What happens after a CP502?
- The next notice is a CP503 (urgent reminder), followed by a CP504 (intent to levy). Each step adds penalties and interest to the balance. Resolving at the CP502 stage is easier and cheaper than waiting.
- Can I still set up a payment plan at this stage?
- Yes. You can apply for a streamlined installment agreement online at IRS.gov if you owe less than $50,000. The process is quick and does not require a financial statement.
