Notice CP01A - IP PIN
IRC Section: IRC § 321
Response Deadline: N/A
This letter contains your IP PIN — a 6-digit code you'll need to file your taxes this year. Keep it safe. If you lose it, retrieving it is difficult and can delay your filing.
A CP01A contains your newly generated 6-digit Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN). The IRS issues this annually to taxpayers who have been victims of identity theft or who have opted into the IP PIN program. The PIN must be included on your tax return to verify your identity.
Common Triggers

Common Questions About CP01A
- What happens if I lose my IP PIN?
- You can retrieve it through the IRS online IP PIN tool (if you can pass identity verification), or by filing Form 15227. If you can't retrieve it, you'll have to file a paper return, which significantly delays processing.
- Do I need my IP PIN every year?
- Yes. Once you're in the IP PIN program, the IRS issues a new 6-digit PIN every January. You must include it on your tax return each year. The PIN changes annually — last year's PIN won't work.
